The Big 5 Challenges the Modern Manager Faces

Every Manager and HR practitioner is faced with challenges on a daily basis. In order to manage employees, the manager needs to know how to deal with these day-to-day issues in a pro-active and constructive way.

Outcomes (what will you get?)

This course is designed to provide employers, managers, HR managers, HR consultants, shop stewards and union officials with the practical and theoretical know how to deal with the 5 big challenges a manager may face. This includes day to day management of insubordination, abuse of sick leave and leave, grievances, counselling, ill health and poor performance to name a few.

Approach (how will you learn?)

The course is practical and highly interactive and designed to solicit interaction from the delegates. This approach stimulates change in thinking and practice and will provide delegates with a safe environment to test ideas, knowledge and practices. The delegate will be supplied with a workbook, inclusive of case studies, relevant legislation, examples and the latest Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court cases, with references.

The six-hour online workshop is designed to provide guidance on how to deal with day to day challenges and the workshop should be attended by managers, HR managers and practitioners, shop stewards, and union representatives.

Module 1 : Complying with your Disciplinary Code:

  • Schedule 8 of the LRA and its application
  • Understanding your disciplinary code and procedures – its role and need in a business.
  • Formal and informal disciplinary procedures
  • How to identify the misconduct
  • Can you deviate from the code and when?
  • The role of an appeal and/or a review in your code

Module 2 : How to deal with day-to-day challenges (misconduct):

  • Insubordination and insolence, gross insubordination.
  • Absenteeism; abscondment and desertion.
  • Abuse of sick leave and leave.

  • Resignations and termination of contract
  • Derivative or team misconduct,

Module 3 : Counselling of employees as an alternative

Module 4 : Day to day challenges in the form of Incapacity due to poor performance or illness (2025 COC)
